The annual awards are our chance to recognise members of the NHS Lothian team who regularly go above and beyond the call of duty and we thank the winners for the hard work, care and dedication they show.

Chair’s Award

Karen Ritchie, Senior Charge Nurse, Rapid Response Team (The Rapid Response Team offers an alternative to hospital for people over 65 in mental health crisis). Karen was singled out for her tremendous effort and passion she has put into her role and wider career .

Young Achiever

Ben Hannan, Pharmacist Team Manager, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh – caught the attention of the judges for daily demonstrating, NHS Lothian’s core values of care and compassion, openness, honesty and responsibility and teamwork, while delivering person-centred care.

Respect for Others

Stuart Baxter, Porter, Western General Hospital, was singled out not only for going above and beyond every day but for his role as a buddy to our Project Search interns (Project Search is an employability programme for young people with disabilities.)

Best Example of Quality, Innovation and Productivity

Metabolic Unit Team, Western General Hospital has been praised by the judges for their innovative and life-changing work in Type 1 Diabetes. Their inventive introduction of a new type of blood test has transformed the lives of patients.

Leadership Excellence

Julie McGill, Clinical Nurse Manager, Royal Hospital for Sick Children won this award for motivating, encouraging and supporting her staff and leading the team in improving working practices and the services they provide to patients.

The Voluntary Service Award

Eric Walker, Volunteer, Audiology Department, Lauriston Building, Edinburgh. Was highlighted for his dedication to patients having volunteered for more than 20 years. At the age of 90 he is an excellent role model showing exceptional commitment and determination to helping others.

Staff Member of the Year

Paul Clapperton, Clerical Officer, Oncology Records Office, Western General Hospital, is widely regarded as an invaluable member of the team who goes out of his way to support his colleagues through his helpful, friendly and approachable manner.

Team of the Year

Collaborative Working for Immediate Care (CWIC) Team, provide same day primary care access in East Lothian. It is a joint project between East Lothian Health and Social Care Practice, the Riverside Practice and NHS 24 who have been singled out for innovative, service redesign focused on patient care and for exemplary team work focused on a successful outcome for patients.

Lynn Jackson Nurse of the Year

Fiona Taylor, Charge Nurse, Ward 11, Western General Hospital was deemed a worthy winner for demonstrating leadership, care and compassion in all aspects of her life.

Caring Champion of the Year

Diane Buckley, Clinical Support Worker, Western General Hospital won this award for her professionalism and the high standard of care she provides to patients and staff alike. Her empathy and warm and comforting bedside manner provides reassurance during times of anxiety.

Health Hero

Loanesk Ward, Midlothian Community Hospital, Bonnyrigg, Midlothian. The team was praised for the exemplary level of care and compassion they give both their patients and their families. They were singled out for being professional, friendly, honest and caring and adding the human touch.

The annual NHS Lothian Celebrating Success Awards recognise staff who embrace the organisation’s core values of care and compassion, dignity and respect, quality, teamwork and openness, honesty and responsibility.
