This Black History Month, colleagues from across NHS Lothian have shared not only their voices and experiences but also photographs celebrating their culture and heritage through traditional attire.
Together, the images and stories offer a vibrant celebration of individuality, while reflecting the shared values and purpose that bring us together across the NHS.
For Osaroese Asemota, Registered Nurse, diversity is something that strengthens the communities around us:
“I believe our differences make our communities richer, our perspectives broader and our connections more meaningful.”
Pedetin Femi-Olekanma, Clinical Skills Facilitator, reflected on the importance of celebrating identity and sharing Black history and culture:
“This month inspires me to embrace my Black identity authentically and to celebrate and educate others about the rich history and culture of Black individuals.”
For Mary-Ann Oloju, Clinical Support Worker, it is also an opportunity to look back while thinking about the future:
“As a Black NHS worker, I believe it is important to recognise the past, celebrate the present and work towards a fairer future for everyone.”
That sense of belonging and making a difference is also reflected by colleagues including Kayode Akintunde, Senior Healthcare Support Worker, who spoke about being proud to work at the Western General Hospital and having the opportunity every day to make a positive difference in someone’s life.
Elizabeth Aromona, Specialist Physiotherapist, highlighted the importance of caring for people from a wide range of backgrounds and being part of an organisation that embraces diversity, while Aderonke Olaide, Registered Nurse, reflected on the reward that comes from making a positive impact on the community and helping people from all walks of life.
And for Rakiya Suleiman MBE, our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead, Black History Month is closely connected to identity and heritage:
“As a Black woman, an immigrant and a nurse, I came to Scotland proud of my heritage and identity.”
Together, these reflections remind us that Black History Month is not only about looking back but also about celebrating the people making a difference today, listening to different experiences and continuing to build an inclusive NHS Lothian where everyone feels valued and able to belong.
This Black History Month, we thank our colleagues for sharing their stories and reflections with us.
