World Kidney Day is an annual event that raises awareness of kidney health and celebrates progress in care and support.

In May 2023, NHS Lothian launched Scotland’s first Renal Young Adult Support Service, designed for patients aged 16–35. Led by Renal Young Adult Support Worker Sharlene Taylor, the service was created to address the unique challenges faced by young adults living with kidney disease. Many patients had never met others with similar experiences before joining the programme.

Initially funded by NHS Lothian Charity, the service was set up on a temporary basis, but it has now secured permanent funding within NHS Lothian, ensuring long‑term stability and continued specialist support for young people.

The impact of the role has already been widely recognised; Sharlene was a finalist for Staff Member of the Year at the Celebrating Success Awards, demonstrating the value and visibility of this pioneering service.

Creativity has also played a powerful part in patient wellbeing. The My Journey art exhibition, currently displayed in the NHS Lothian Charity’s Tonic Arts Gallery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, showcases artwork created by young adults as a way to explore and express their experiences.

The service has also secured further funding from the Charity to deliver Youth Scotland Awards, accredited by the Scottish Qualifications Authority, enabling young people to gain SCQF credits while building confidence, teamwork skills and self‑worth.

National recognition continues to grow. Sharlene has presented at the Scottish Renal Association Conference and contributed to a Kidney Care UK Roundtable at Holyrood, highlighting the essential role of psychosocial support in renal care across Scotland.

A new impact report, created with NHS Lothian Charity, highlights positive outcomes and growing engagement.

The Renal Young Adult Support Service continues to empower young people to take an active role in their healthcare and build confidence for the future
