NHS Lothian is pleased to be bringing forward plans to deliver a new walk-in GP service in Wester Hailes.

The Scottish Government is funding a network of new walk-in GP services and announced last week (Thursday 15 January 2026) that NHS Lothian’s proposal will be the first future pilot site.

While the plans in NHS Lothian are still being finalised, the new service will aim to give local people greater choice and flexibility in accessing primary care between 12pm-8pm, seven days a week.

NHS Lothian is working closely with the Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership, the Scottish Government and Wester Hailes Healthy Living Centre, where the service will be based, to roll out the pilot.

It will complement existing local GP, health and community services, providing same day access to GPs and other healthcare professionals for urgent conditions without needing an appointment.

The pilot is being led and managed by NHS Lothian in partnership with Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership and is currently scheduled to be open in February, but more details will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

The Cabinet Secretary, Neil Gray, visited Wester Hailes Healthy Living Centre last week to meet with representatives for the pilot and learn more about the proposal.   To read more about the announcement, please visit Scottish Government news
