Basil
Reading Time: 2 minutes

For Black History Month, we’re shining a light on a couple of our colleagues from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities. We caught up with Basil Ndikom, Specialist Biomedical Scientist, Western General Hospital (WGH), who’s shared his experience working for NHS Lothian.

Tell us about your background before joining NHS Lothian?

I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science from Imo State University, Nigeria, in 2014. I then pursued a master’s degree in molecular medicine at Near East University in Cyprus. I joined NHS Lothian in January 2023. Before that, I worked as a biomedical scientist at Federal Medical Centre Makurdi and University Hospital of the Federal University of Agriculture, both in Benue State, Nigeria. While in Cyprus, I worked as a biomedical scientist and research assistant at the DESAM Research Institute, where I participated in various research projects in molecular medicine, cell and tissue culture, and laboratory kit production.

Tell us about your role at NHS Lothian?

I currently work in the Blood Science Laboratory, Biochemistry Department, at the Western General Hospital. Since starting here, I’ve gained experience in several areas of the specialist biochemistry lab, including the Auto-Core Section, which operates 24/7 and handles routine chemistry and immunological assays and sample testing. I am one of the staff trained to manage this section around the clock. My responsibilities also include working in the clinic section, where we check blood glucose level measurements, supporting the online diabetic clinic. Currently, I am in the antenatal section, where we carry out first trimester screenings for the entire Scottish population.

What would you say to other people from BME communities considering working for Lothian?

NHS Lothian demonstrates a strong commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion, which is evident in several aspects of the organisation. From my first day here, my team has been very supportive. I have been nominated for a couple of awards. I won the ‘Best Individual Workplace Photo’ award at the Institute of biomedical science (IBMS) Day 2024, and I’m currently one of the finalists for the Young Achievers Award at the Scotland Health Awards. As a member of the BME community I would highly recommend NHS Lothian as a place to work.
