Saturday (30th September) marks International Translation Day! A day recognising and celebrating the work of translation professionals across the globe.
Did you know that NHS Lothian has its own Interpretation & Translation Service (ITS)? The team helps connect clinicians and patients with interpreters, so language is never a barrier to healthcare.
Matt Bird, ITS Manager, said: “With a background in French and German, joining the NHS in 2022 meant I could combine my experience and love of languages with helping people.
“We facilitate thousands of appointments a month – most are over the phone, but we employ five translators, including two BSL interpreters, to provide in-person support when needed.
“We also have an amazing team of interpreters on the Staff Bank, covering 30-40 languages.
“I’ve had medical care in other countries, but the clinicians have always spoken English. It’s really difficult to imagine what it would be like to get medical care in another country – especially in an emergency situation or as a tourist – when you’re not confident communicating with your doctor.
“We’re here to make that experience less stressful and it’s a really rewarding role.”
NHS interpreters are qualified professionals who are trained to understand complex medical information and deliver sometimes difficult news.
They are an impartial voice who ensures that the patient has a clear understanding of their medical situation, and the confidence and knowledge to make informed choices.
