Tom Power has been appointed into the role, which is a post he will take up early next year following the retirement of Janis Butler, who leaves after 36 years working in the NHS, predominantly within NHS Lothian.

Tom, who has been the Director of People and Culture in NHS Grampian since 2020, will take up the post in Lothian in March.

He has worked for NHS Scotland for the last 12 years, after another 10 years working in hospital trusts in London and the University of London. He has a strong background in organisational, leadership and workforce development, with significant experience as a coach and practitioner supporting the development of individuals and teams at all levels across a range of professional disciplines.

Tom is passionate about the role employers can play in creating environments where people can flourish, and the importance of putting the workforce centre stage in delivering value for patients, service users and colleagues.

Tom said: “These are challenging times for the NHS, which present real opportunities for reforming how things are done.

“I am delighted to be joining NHS Lothian whose teams deliver the highest quality treatment and care. I look forward to working with them and helping them to achieve against the backdrop of growing demand and rising challenge.

“In doing so, I will undoubtedly benefit from the rich experience gained working in NHS Grampian over the past four and a half years.”

Caroline Hiscox, Chief Executive, NHS Lothian, said: “I’m delighted to have Tom join NHS Lothian as part of our team and I’m confident that he will continue to help steer and support our teams into our next chapter.”

John Connaghan, Chair of NHS Lothian, said: “On behalf of the Board, I wish to welcome Tom to NHS Lothian and congratulate him on his appointment. We look forward to working with Tom as he helps to build and strengthen our teams of dedicated and talented staff.”

Tom and Janis will have a short period of handover before Janis retires at the end of March 2025.
