Scottish Modern Apprenticeship Week

Reading Time: 2 minutes

NHS Lothian offers several Apprenticeship opportunities every year in a variety of different specialities. Apprenticeships are a fantastic opportunity for anyone between the ages of 16-24 years old, or up to 29 years of age if you’re disabled or have care experience, to start your career within Healthcare.

Daisy Tipton (25) started her modern apprenticeship (MA) in January 2023 and is now a Medical Secretary to Colorectal Surgeons.

What made you decide to start a modern apprenticeship?

I wanted to start a modern apprenticeship to gain qualifications and work experience for a role I believed would be a good fit for me.

Was it easy to apply?

It was extremely easy to apply for this MA position, I did this on the official NHS Scotland jobs website, after filtering my search down to “administration”. The MA team were also in constant communication with me after my initial application to ensure all aspects and information in the application was included.

Explain your day to day role?

My day-day job usually includes handling incoming and outgoing phone calls to and from patients and accurately relaying information to the consultant. I undertake a review of any mail received and ensure it relates to the appropriate professional and distribute it accordingly. It is my responsibility to ensure clinics are booked appropriately to avoid delays in patient care; I type the corresponding letter for the consultant after they have reviewed this patient in clinic and post this to the patient/ GP depending on the consultants wishes.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part my job is having a positive impact on the patient’s life and the support of my amazing team; everyone has a “can do” attitude and reflect the NHS values, which I believe align with my own.

What would you say to anyone thinking about starting a modern apprenticeship and aren’t sure?

Deciding to partake in this apprenticeship was the best decision I have made. If someone was unsure, I would say “what’s the worst that can happen?” It is an amazing opportunity to jump start your career and if you decide it’s not for you, you can leave at any time. You can also reach out to a member of the MA team who are always available if you have any questions/ concerns”.
