A full return of radiotherapy services is under way at the Western General Hospital following completion of work to eliminate Legionella bacteria in water supplying parts of the treatment area.

The actions taken over the past weeks to quickly isolate the water source and carry out an extensive plan of maintenance and plumbing work has successfully removed bacteria from the system.

Waiting times for treatment were not affected while the maintenance took place.

In line with national guidance, all patient and non-clinical services are now reoccupying the building following three rounds of testing showing that the water supply is Legionella free.

Alison MacDonald, Nurse Director, NHS Lothian said:

“We’re pleased to report that we’re able to reopen all patient services, including the two specialist radiotherapy treatment machines (Linacs) which were temporarily closed during remedial works.

“Our staff have worked tirelessly to ensure patients could continue to receive essential treatments on the Linacs that were not affected, with minimal disruption, and I want to thank them for keeping services running.

“My thanks also go to the teams carrying out the cleaning, maintenance and plumbing work to ensure a prompt and safe return to the building.”

The situation will continue to be closely monitored and enhanced maintenance and testing will continue to be carried out as a precautionary measure.

Alison MacDonald added:

“We want to assure patients that safety is our utmost priority and every step has been followed to ensure the water supply is safe. We thank them for their patience and understanding and apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time.”

NHS Lothian announced on 1 August 2023 that investigations were being carried out within the radiotherapy department at the Western General Hospital to address a strain of Legionella which does not usually cause infection in humans.

There were no cases of infection in staff or patients.

Patients attending the treatment area who have any concerns can speak to their treatment team.
