NHS Lothian has taken further steps in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint, tackle climate change and improve long-term sustainability by extending and introducing new roles.

In 2022, NHS Lothian introduced the role of Medical Education Fellow in Sustainability for the first time. The aim of the role was to raise awareness of environmental issues, facilitate collaboration and provide education and support to clinical colleagues and service teams.

We are pleased to announce that the role will continue in 2023-2024 and introduce our new fellow, Dr Kate Mitchell (pictured below).

This role links NHS Lothian’s Sustainability Team with clinical services and specialties across the organisation who are progressing with quality improvement projects which support a greener NHS.

On top of this, we have also introduced three new energy managers and a new energy support officer and are thrilled to welcome Nasir M. Nasir, Ikechukwu Udechukwu, Basanti Narine and Sarah Bariqua AbdMalek to these roles.

Daniel Mill, NHS Lothian’s Energy and Technical Sustainability Lead, said: “This is an exciting moment in our sustainability journey.

“With the development of this team, we aim to increase activity at site level, with a clear value in engaging staff across NHS Lothian to actively participate in our sustainability initiatives.”

Jane Hopton, NHS Lothian’s Sustainability Lead, said: “The team bring a strong mix of expertise and experience to NHS Lothian as we work to play our part in the global challenge.

“A key aim of the team will be to engage with sites and services across NHS Lothian to ensure that we take every opportunity to reduce our carbon and energy consumption whilst continuing to provide excellent patient care.”
