NHS Scotland published its Climate Emergency and Sustainability Strategy 2022-2026 this week, with ambitions which face up to the climate and ecological crisis as a health emergency.
The new strategy sets out actions needed for all of the NHS in Scotland to be a net-zero health service by 2040 at the latest. It supports the delivery of UN Sustainability Goals and a Fairer, Greener Society. It recognises the alignment between the principles of environmental sustainability and the overall vision for NHS Scotland in terms of prevention, sustainable models of care and sustainable communities.
Jane Hopton, NHS Lothian Sustainability Lead said: “We welcome the publication of the strategy and its goals. This commitment from NHS Scotland will support NHS Lothian to strengthen and develop its vision and ambitions.
“The strategy will help to support our services that are already striving to make the way they deliver care greener and more sustainable for the future. We hope it will also help more of our staff to recognise the important role the NHS has as part of the wider public sector and community efforts to urgently address the Climate Emergency.”
